Create a Fabulous Kids’ Room

Whether your child’s room needs a makeover or they’re simply moving from nursery to a “big kid” room, there are a few things you should keep in mind when creating. From keeping things on their level to fitting in extra storage space, here are a few tips to help you make your child’s room into a place they’ll love to hang out.

  1. Scale things down to size. There are a lot of things kids can’t reach (sometimes with good cause) but when it comes to their personal space, it will help them stay more organized and give them more of a sense of personal freedom if things are on their level. Benches and storage space will be used more often if kids can reach them without climbing. And when it comes to their closet, keep hanging rods low enough so they can grab their clothes themselves. Throw a few drawers or bins in their low enough down so they can reach and label them with what they should contain (socks, etc.) and it will be much easier for them to put things away.
  2. Space within a space. Whether you have small children that love art projects or older kids who are doing homework every night, creating a mini-office space within their room will benefit them greatly. A dedicated space that gives them an area designed specifically for homework or messy art projects creates less distraction and less mess. It certainly doesn’t have to be elaborate, a simple writing desk like the one below and cozy chair will do!kid desk
  3. Maximize your space. Particularly if your child’s room is on the small side, you’ll want to maximize the space you have. One easy way to do so is by pushing your child’s bed up against the wall leaving the floor clear for playing. Bonus: with less open space around the bed, your child should be less afraid of monsters hiding under the bed.
  4. Maximize your space, part II. Storage in a kid’s room is vital. With toys, drawings, art supplies, clothes, and collectibles, the more storage the better! But sometimes it seems like there’s just not enough space for storage. One fix is vertical storage – use wall shelving to keep things neat; the lower shelves can hold books or toys while higher ones can hold keepsakes out of reach. Another option is investing in a bed that doubles as storage such as the one below that holds drawers AND shelves. Finally, utilize every space available. Think about places you might not normally put shelves – like behind the door – and shelve away.storage bed5.  Lighting is important. Include multiple kinds of lighting in your child’s room. Overhead lighting is a must, of course, but don’t forget reading lights on the desk or on the bed, or nightlights to keep away monsters and guide the way to the bathroom.

Most important though is to have fun with designing and furnishing your kid’s room! Childhood doesn’t last forever so make it as fun as possible. Build whimsy into your child’s room, display their art in creative ways, and let them help choose colors and themes when possible.

We love telling you more about some of the brands we carry and we hope you enjoy learning more about some of your favorite brands as well! Today we’d like to tell you a little more about Flexsteel. So, sit back, relax and have a closer look at Flexsteel!

Flexsteel Industries, Inc., founded in 1893 as Rolph & Ball Furniture company, is one of the oldest U.S. upholstered furniture manufacturers. 120 years later, Flexsteel is a true American success story, having gone from one small factory in Minneapolis to a nationwide five-plant, global sourcing network. They’re known for making high-quality, long-lasting stationary & reclining furniture – sofas, sectionals, love-seats, chairs, recliners & more – offered in a selection of styles that runs the gambit and with a variety of price points.

What sets Flexsteel apart from the rest is their use of the Blue Steel Spring. Developed by Swiss inventor E.W. Schlappritzi in the 1920s for European railroad car seating, Flexsteel decided to use this as the base for their furniture to stand out. It’s performed so well that the design has barely changed in over 75 years and Flexsteel guarantees it for life.

Flexsteel also offers warranties for many of the other materials used in their cushions and reclining mechanisms, not just this one. Since each piece of furniture is created by skilled craftsmen and each frame thoroughly tested to meet the highest of quality standards, this is their way of offering you peace-of-mind. Your furniture will continue to support and comfort for years to come.

No matter your style or needs, Flexsteel offers the selection that’s exactly right for your home. Most pieces are available in thousands of frame and fabric combos, so no matter how you’ve imagined your perfect fit, you’ll be sure to find it.
