Get Your Home Fall-Ready

the-best-diy-fall-craft-ideas-kids-home-decor-projects-6-680x496

Autumn is officially here and while the weather may not have gotten the memo just yet, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be prepared for fall weather. Now is the perfect time to get your home fall-ready with the help of a few easy tips. Have a look below to see what you should be doing to get ready!

  1. Cozy bedding – Cooler weather means it’s time to break out cozy everything! Don’t forget to include your cozy bedding like down comforters, cotton sheets, & knits. Take ’em out of storage and give ’em a good wash, then you’ll be good to go when the nights get truly cold.

  2. Clean off outdoor furniture – It’s time to get your outdoor & patio furniture ready for next year. That means hosing them down to remove dirt & stains, cleaning off any cobwebs, and removing the cushions. After that, simply store them till you need them again.

  3. Clean your chimney – You’ll likely be using your fireplace a lot come winter so schedule a chimney cleaning now to avoid chimney fires!

  4. Stock up on firewood – While you’re at it, this is also a good time to get a start on your firewood pile. Trust us, you’ll be super glad you did when winter comes around.

  5. Organize your garage – We know, we know; organizing your garage is probably the least fun thing you could do. But come fall, when you aren’t tripping over things while looking for the rake and you find it in one try, you’ll be thankful you did. It’s also a great opportunity to see if you need any new tools.

  6. Flip your rugs – Help your rugs live long, healthy lives by flipping them every fall. Chances are if you have rugs in a room, parts of them are covered by furniture. This results in the parts underneath the furniture looking brand new while the other parts get faded by the sun and look worn & traveled. Flipping will alleviate this problem.

  7. Check the furnace/boiler – Whichever of these you have, you need to have it checked to make sure it’s working properly. Also, if you have a furnace remember to change the filters regularly throughout fall and winter. It will keep energy costs down!

  8. Reverse your ceiling fans – This one is as easy as flipping a switch. Reversing your ceiling fan so it turns in a clockwise direction moves warm that is close to the ceiling down to the floor and can help you save on heating bills.

  9. Fall Gardening – Prep your garden for spring! There are plenty of flowers to plant in the fall that will bloom in the spring such as tulips, iris, daffodil, hyacinth, and lily.

  10. Wash the outside of windows – How often do you clean the outside of your windows? Bring in a little extra sunlight on those cold, dreary days by doing just that! Simply attach a window cleaner to your hose and you’re set!

These tips will not only make fall a breeze, but they’ll help you & your family stay safe AND help you save money. It’s pretty win-win all around. Cheers, to fall!

Back to School Sleep Hacks

Child Sleep

School is starting soon and that means so do back to school routines such as early to bed, early to rise. It can be hard to get back into the swing of the sleep routine after a summer of fun & late nights, but there are ways to make it easier on yourself and your kids. Try these tips and hacks, and you’ll be back on track in no time.

To start, ease everybody back into the swing of routines, especially earlier bedtimes. A couple of weeks before school starts, start having the kids go to bed 15 minutes earlier each night till they hit their schooltime bedtime (ex. If they’ve been going to bed at 9, but need to go to bed at 8 during school, you’d start the first night at 8:45, the next at 8:30, and so on). This way it’s less of a shock and they’re less likely to put up a huge fuss.

Speaking of times for bed, set a regular time between 7pm & 8pm. Every child has different sleep needs, but generally most school-aged children need between 10-12 hours of sleep. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine offers these sleep guidelines for parents:

  • 4-12 months: 12-16 hours
  • 1-2 years: 11-14 hours
  • 3-5 years: 10-13 hours
  • 6-12 years: 9-12 hours
  • 13-18 years: 8-10 hours
  • 18+ years: 7+ hours

Once you have a set time and are working on getting back to that set time before school actually begins, it’s good to create a night time routine. About an hour before lights’ out, get things done like laying out clothes for the next day, taking showers/baths, brushing teeth, and putting on PJs. If you do the same thing each night before bed, the routine will start becoming a cue that it’s almost time for sleep.

A wonderful thing to have as part of your kids’ bedtime routine that children universally love? Bedtime stories! It winds kids down if they’re still energetic, creates a wonderful opportunity for bonding, and helps kids with their reading. It’s win-win all around. Something to avoid, however, is reading e-books – or looking at screens (tv, phone, computer) in general – at any point in the half hour leading up to sleep. Electronics emit blue light which causes a delay in the natural release of the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin. No melatonin means no Mr. Sandman. (The avoiding electronics 30 minutes before bed rule is an excellent one for adults as well!).

Finally, make sure your child’s bedroom is primed for the perfect sleep. Blackout blinds are handy as bedrooms should be as dark as possible (though nightlights are useful too if your child doesn’t prefer complete darkness). Letting your child pick out their own sheet set will go a long way to getting them excited for bed too! And, of course, there’s the matter of making sure the mattress is comfortable – not too hard, not too soft (the kind of mattress Goldilocks would prefer). We have a great selection of mattresses at our stores and online PLUS a slew of more awesome information on sleep health on our website as well if it’s a mattress you need. Just drop by or give us a call!

Change can be hard, especially when it’s time to end summer fun and go back to school. These back to school sleep hacks should make the change a bit easier and give you and your kids one less thing to stress out over as the school season starts anew.

Featured Brand: Bassett

bassett

We love telling you more about some of the brands we carry and we hope you enjoy learning more about some of your favorite brands as well! Today we’d like to tell you a little more about Bassett. Sit back, relax and have a closer look at Bassett!

Where did Bassett begin? Once upon a time, circa late 1800s, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia, there was a family named Bassett. They ran a sawmill that supplied rail ties for a new rail line that was being built through the family property. When the rail line was finally completed in 1892, the Bassett family wondered where else they could market their lumber.

Family member J.D. traveled the countryside selling goods for general stores and carrying lumber samples from the mill. He soon returned home with the knowledge of the growing furniture industry and demand for raw lumber. It wasn’t long before he had orders for oak from several furniture stores in North Carolina. He then quickly learned that the best market for Appalachian oak was up north and set about conquering those. Eventually, he realized that instead of shipping raw lumber out to various northern locations to be made into furniture that was, in turn, shipped back to the South (amongst other places) that there was no reason furniture couldn’t be made right there!

So, in 1902 the Bassett Furniture Company was born. To start, the company had approximately 50 men from the surrounding area, and focused on styles made of oak and featured simple profiles with carved overlays. Early dressers sold for $4.75, washstands for $2.75 and beds for $1.50. (Yes, BEDS were the cheapest. Wha-?) By 1917, company sales reached $1 million (or approximately $21,252,068 in today’s dollar).

Post-war years brought rapid growth as suburbs sprang up around the country. Then in the early ’60s, the company bought Prestige Furniture Corp. and added upholstery to its repertoire; after they acquired three other companies to expand bedroom and dining room production. The 1990s saw trends & markets shift again with the death of the “mom-and-pop” stores and the growth of the chain store. So in 1997, Bassett opened their first store.

The Bassett of today is similar to the Bassett of yesteryear in their commitment that great, quality, and stylish furniture should be affordable and available to all. They create custom furniture and solutions that make it easy to express your unique sense of style.

You can check out their furniture on our site plus use our super neat HGTV Home Studio to create a living room set that is representative of your style, floor plan, and the way you use your room. Or drop by one of our locations today to see everything in person!

Avoid These Common Furniture Buying Mistakes

Avoiding-Common-Mobile-Project-Mistakes

Buying furniture is a BIG DEAL. Besides purchasing a car and home, furniture is one of the biggest items a person buys (not just size, but price). It’s also another one of those items that will (hopefully) be around for a very long time, so choosing just the right pieces of furniture for your home requires time and care. Whether you’re purchasing your first sofa or are on your third dining table, there are some common mistakes people tend to make that you’ll want to avoid.

  1. Not considering your lifestyle and future. Sometimes we see a piece of furniture that’s just SO beautiful or SO cool that we immediately say, “Mine!” without stopping to consider how it will be to actually LIVE with it. Do you have kids and/or pets? Then you need sturdy furniture that can withstand anything that’s thrown at it (literally & figuratively). If you or your family are on the messy side, unfortunately, that white chair is NOT for you. See what we mean? You also need to consider how long you plan to keep a piece (especially if it’s a splurge). Most people buy furniture with the intention of keeping it, well, forever, but what does the future look like? Will you be adding children to your family? If so, that loveseat might be a bit on the wee side. Is there a chance you could be moving in the next couple of years for work? The future can’t be foretold, we know, but consider what your plans are before you purchase!

  2. Not visualizing. Don’t just think about how a new piece of furniture will look in the room, period. Think about how it will look with the current furniture already there. Does it work? It can sometimes be hard to be in a store and visualize how an item will work in a room, so ask for color swatches to bring home. Some places, like Amazon, even have cool virtual reality apps so you can literally see the piece in your home before buying.

  3. Not measuring enough (or at all). You know that eyeballing a space isn’t a good way to measure whether something will fit there so you’ll measure the space where new furniture will go. But did you remember to also measure the room to make sure everything else still fits with the new piece? Even more important, did you measure hallways, doors, stairs and elevators? Nothing is more disheartening than get a piece of furniture you love home only to realize it won’t fit through the door/hall!

  4. Don’t just go with the set. It’s tempting to buy the entire set of furniture, we get it. It looks nice and it’s convenient. But design is about textures & colors and layering, as well as telling your story. Does all that matching furniture REALLY fit your style? Consider mixing tones, textures, and styles you wouldn’t ordinarily think would pair well together!

  5. Not thinking it through. Sometimes impulsivity is a good thing – NOT when it comes to furniture buying though! Buying furniture may seem easier than, say, buying a car because you feel like, hey, just looking for the right color and size. Right? Nope. There are a host of other factors to consider that you don’t want to rush through (the “sit test” for one!). People can spend months searching for the right car, so why spend minutes buying furniture? Do your research, make sure it’s furniture you can live with, then walk away for a day or two to be sure. Otherwise, you might end up with chairs that look absolutely brilliant but are so uncomfortable you can’t actually sit on them or something similar.

  6. Don’t forget maintenance. Getting new furniture is exciting and so long as that excitement lasts, you’ll be more than happy to clean your purchase each and every day if necessary. Try to keep in mind how you’ll feel when the “new” wears off though. That’s when cleaning your item will become a chore just like the rest so consider how much (or little) maintenance you’ll be up for doing!

  7. Don’t forget your price range. You’ll go out (or online) furniture shopping with a price range in mind – don’t forget it! Keep in mind costs such as delivery or custom upholstery when making your purchase; otherwise you’ll leave your price range behind. Look for sales, online promotions, and various offers by stores that will save you money AND offer additional advantages (such as free shipping).

Keep these things in mind when your going to purchase furniture and you’ll make not just aesthetically pleasing choices, but smart ones! Furniture is a huge purchase – you should be sure you’re getting the best items for your lifestyle, ones that will last as long as possible. Need more help finding that perfect piece? Drop by our website or visit one of our stores and we’ll help you make the best furniture purchase possible!

Spice Up Your Outdoor Living Space

traditional-outdoor-living-wood-deck-structure-seating-area-3-1024x683

Summer is officially here and that means you’ll be using your outdoor living space more & more (we hope!). Patio furniture can sometimes get a bit…mundane with the metal tables and chairs and umbrellas however. We think you should live your best life indoors AND out, starting with creative furniture design. Here are a few great ideas if you’re feeling change in the air this season.

  1. Bring your sofa outdoors. Okay, not REALLY, but get an outdoor sofa. It’s much more comfortable than metal or plastic chairs and will save room.

  2. Don’t forget the coffee…table that is. If you have an outdoor sofa (or even if you don’t go that route), an outdoor coffee table can complete the look – especially if you use a little creativity. Match the great outdoors with a tree stump coffee table or swing the other way to ultra-modern. Whichever you choose, tables are a must for a fabulous outdoor gathering.

  3. Organize your outdoor space with a cabinet or shelves. If you garden or work outdoors, you can neatly store your supplies in this space. If you don’t, you can use it for decorative purposes – think how lovely it would look to have a wall of flickering candles during a late night soiree!

  4. If you’re lounging outdoors – reading a good book or just taking a nap – you’ll definitely want to prop up your feet. Grab an ottoman made for the outdoors and make yourself comfy.

  5. If you really want a chair or two to complete your outdoor look, consider a rocking chair (especially if you have a porch!). There’s just something about gently rocking on the porch while engaged in long conversations that’s so perfectly summer.

  6. If you want to get really creative, have a hanging bed in your backyard. Nights spent sleeping under the stars are some of the best and, besides, how cool is a hanging bed?

Be creative this summer with your outdoor living spaces. There’s so much you can do besides patio furniture or just a table + chairs. And if you’re still looking for that one perfect piece, stop by one of our stores or drop by our website – you’re sure to find it. Try one of the ideas above or find another piece of furniture that’s typically thought of as “indoor” that you could use outside as well and before you know it, you’ll have the coolest backyard on the block!

Feng Shui for Kids

Feng-Shui-for-Your-Child

You’ve heard of feng shui before but what exactly is it and what is it good for? Feng shui is an ancient art and science that was formalized over 3,000 years ago in China (though some elements date back at least 6000 years!). It contains elements of physics, philosophy, astronomy, astrology, and other branches of scholarly study. Basically, it’s thought to be the art of placement – understanding how the placement of yourself and objects within a space affects your life in various areas of experience. What’s the point of that? Well, it teaches us how to balance the energies in a space and aims to assure good fortune (hey, we’re down with that!). Plenty of people think it’s just mumbo jumbo, while plenty of other people swear by it. We figure it never hurts to give something a try at least once, right? And when it comes to feng shui and kids’ rooms, feng shui is supposed to help create a space where your child feels genuinely happy, empowered and loved by balancing their creativity and freedom with structures and boundaries. (Also, one of the supposed benefits of feng shui is that it can help children feel more calm and centered, which can translate to better sleep at night – and as parents, we understand the importance of good sleep!) If you’re interested in giving it a go, check out these tips to get started.

  1. A Good Foundation. To start, you need a good foundation. What does that look like? It looks like a clean, clutter free space! We know the words “kids” and “clutter-free” don’t exactly always go together, but clutter clearing and organizing are absolutely necessary steps for good feng shui in your child’s room. Not having a clear organization system and clear space can lead to chaos and low energy. Create a clutter clearing system that really works and stick to it! Creating space and visual openness helps your child to feel less pressured, and more likely to be imaginative and creative. And if you need help clearing that clutter, Suburban Furniture has fabulous solutions!

  2. The Bed. Align the child’s bed to the widest part of the room. Make sure your child can see the door from his or her bed easily, but is not in direct line of the door.

  3. Subtle Authority. Be sure to place a happy picture of the parents in kids’ rooms. Why? It subtly exerts authority and prominence of parents as heads of household. Plus, if you child is a bit unruly, this is a subtle feng shui solution to calm their energy.

  4. Let’s Study! Having a dedicated space where your child can study, such as a specific desk or beanbag, etc., demonstrates the importance you place on education. As to where you should have this dedicated study space – if your child has been having issues in school (ie low grades), place the study area in the NE corner of the bedroom. And, if possible, celebrate your child’s accomplishments with an area along the south wall! Displaying awards, trophies, ribbons, crafts, etc. here reinforces that you’re proud of your child and their efforts.

  5. Colors. This one might be a bit tougher, if only because there’s more to take into account. Your child’s bedroom should have the right balance of yin & yang energy – meaning not too bright and not too dark – but should also fit their personal taste/personality. When painting a room, it’s recommended that you avoid bright colors like neon (or even busy wallpaper) because it can overstimulate a child and disrupt their sleep and go with pastel blues, greens, or pinks to create a calming, healing atmosphere.

  6. Fresh Air. Houses can get a little stale from time to time and Febreeze is not a fix-all, and kids definitely need to get plenty of fresh air! Monitor the air quality in kids’ rooms and open the windows when possible. You can also add some air-purifying plants to keep things healthy & green!

  7. Encourage Free Expression. Boundaries are good and necessary, but so is freedom. Let your child choose art for their room (and especially display their own art!) and help develop the look and feel of the room. The more control your child has over his or her space, the more empowered they will feel, and this is always good feng shui!

Feng shui doesn’t have to be complicated; there are lots of simple little tricks you can try out to see if they have an effect on your home before committing to anything in depth and more complicated. And Suburban Furniture is here to help you feng shui away with plenty of storage options, amazing mattresses and beds, and more! Right now our entire store is ½ off with 6 months interest-free financing, so it’s a fabuous time to try some feng shui of your own!

Happy Memorial Day!

Memorial-Day

Did you know that the name “Memorial Day” wasn’t used till 1882? Originally Memorial Day was known as “Decoration Day” (something some people in the South still have, completely separate from Memorial Day). “Memorial Day” also wasn’t the official name of the holiday (by federal law) until 1967. Plus Memorial Day was originally on May 30th – until 1968, that is, when Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act which moved Memorial Day (and a few other holidays) from their regular dates to certain Mondays, so as to create convenient 3-day weekends (thanks, guys!). Even this didn’t take place on a federal level till 1971 though, and even then, it took a few more years to implement across all 50 states because some states just weren’t having any of it. So, while Memorial Day is technically an old holiday, several aspects are much newer.

memorial day

Memorial Day is also a great time to add some NEW into your life, seeing as how it’s the “official” start of summer. New season, new goals, new changes. It’s why we’re having a HUGE Memorial Day sale until June 3rd! Right now, we have store-wide savings up to 67% off! Plus enjoy an INSTANT sales tax rebate, 5 years FREE financing with no interest till 2023, and an instant FREE delivery rebate. The awesome doesn’t stop there though. At Suburban Furniture we know that sleep is power (and sleep = happiness for a lot of us!) so we’ve added a HUGE mattress sale to help make your life even better! How does a Sealy gel memory foam mattress starting at $9/month sound? (Pretty great, right?) And we offer a 90-day sleep happy guarantee! So how about adding some newness to your life during this old-new holiday weekend?

And finally, as to the actual reason for the Memorial Day holiday, we at Suburban Furniture praise the men and women who sacrificed their lives in the name of our country. Their selfless devotion, outstanding courage, and honor inspire us to make their sacrifice meaningful. Thank you, one and all.
