Why is it important to have healthy sleep habits and the right mattress?

Everything you do on a daily basis is impacted by how well, or poorly, you sleep. Finding the right mattress and pillow for you and building healthy sleep habits can impact everything from aches and pains, to how productive you are at work, to what kind of mood you’re in. Getting a full night’s sleep can make it easier to cut out that extra cup of coffee or energy drink you may rely on every day.

How Do You Sleep?

How you sleep is a huge part of finding a mattress that is not only comfortable but also instrumental in ensuring you wake up every morning feeling refreshed and without aches or pains.

Side Sleeper- If you’re a side sleeper you will likely find your best night’s sleep on a softer mattress that allows your hip to sink into the mattress a little bit. This give from the mattress allows your hip to drop down a bit and allows your spine to properly align.

Back Sleeper- If you’re a back sleeper you will likely find your best night’s sleep on a softer mattress that allows your shoulders and hips to sink in a little bit and allow your spine to properly align. If a mattress is too firm you will likely feel uncomfortable points of pressure similar to the pain many of us feel after sitting in a car for a long drive.

Stomach Sleeper- If you’re a stomach sleeper then your best night’s sleep will likely come from a firmer mattress. Unlike back and side sleeper’s you’re already putting yourself in a position where your spine is aligned. This means that a mattress with more give will actually cause your spine to slump a bit which could lead to you waking up with back pain.

We’ll have more blogs on sleep health and how the importance of mattresses in the sleep equation, so make sure you continue to drop by on the reg! And if you’re ready to shop for your new mattress so you can get the best night’s sleep possible, simply visit us HERE.

How to Choose Your Forever Sofa

Whether you’re buying your first ever sofa or you’ve had your current sofa for approximately 873 years and it’s time to send it out to the farm, picking out a sofa is a big deal. What kind of sofa will last the longest? What’s the best bang for your buck? And which will be the most comfortable for those Netflix marathons? We’ve got the tips that will help you find your forever sofa!

  1. Check the frame. The sturdier the frame, the longer-lasting the sofa. Soft wood, like pine, may be low cost, but it’ll also warp after a few years. Hardwood, however, is more durable. Likewise, frames made of particleboard, plastic, or metal may warp or crack, so avoid those too. Make sure the legs are part of the frame, or at the least that they’re held on with screws or pegs. Stay away if legs are simply glued on. A simple way to test the frame? Lift one front corner of the sofa off the floor. By the time you’ve raised it 6 inches, the other front leg should have risen as well. If it’s still touching the floor, the frame has too much give (ie, it’s weak).
  2. Joinery. This one’s easy – never buy a sofa that’s held together solely by staples, nails, and/or glue. Oh, and ask your salesperson for written manufacturer information on frame joinery.
  3. Test the springs. This one comes down to about 75% comfort. Most sofas have those snake like curly springs. They’re nicely supportive, but they can press on the frame or sage over time if the metal isn’t heavy. High-end sofas often come with “eight-way hand-tied springs” (ooohhh, fancy). They’re really comfy, but also expensive; and some experts think they aren’t any better than the snake-y springs. So, basically – feel the springs! They should be close together and firm. Also, sofas without springs (with webbing or mesh) = super uncomfy and flimsy. To test ’em, sit down firmly on a corner of the sofa. If you hear squeaks and creaks, it typically means that the springs are hitting the frame or they’re placed incorrectly.
  4. It’s all about the fillings. There are A LOT of options out there when it comes to cushion fillings. Good options that are comfy and reasonably priced? High-resilient foam in a lawyer of down and conventional foam wrapped in polyester batting.
  5. Toughen your sofa up! Unless your sofa is going to be hanging out in a room for decorational purposes only, it’s going to need a durable fabric. Cotton and linen are awesome (but not loose weaves because they can snag). There’s also synthetic microfiber which can mimic most fabrics and is stain resistant (yes!). This one is more durable than cotton and linen as well. Wool and leather? Handsome and strong but expensive. Silk? Sleek but fragile. Fabrics that have patterns woven in tend to wear better than those with printed patterns. Want to see how the sofa might look in your room before you get it? Ask the store for a piece of fabric larger than the usual swath. Place it where the sofa will go, view it in both natural and artificial light, and see how much you still like it after a few days.
